, it means cutting $85 billion a year, half from the pentagon, half from nondefense programs. everything from education to national parks to meals on wheels. exempt from the cuts, programs like social security and veterans' benefits and student loans. the administration warns federal food inspectors would be temporarily furloughed. that could mean less product, higher prices and fewer jobs. air travelers may see longer lines at security checkpoints. by one congressional estimate, as many as 9,000 tsa officers may have to be laid off. the pentagon budget would be cut 11% a year even as the war in afghanistan continues. d.o.d. civilian workers will likely take the hit. plans call for more than 700,000 to take one day off a week without pay, a 20% pay cut. jason mckenzie owns ride on bikes in columbus, georgia, home to fort benning. military employees make up half his business so smaller paychecks could mean fewer sales. >> it's going to take money out of everybody's pocket, everything. everybody will stop spending, everybody. >> reporter: one of the ripple effects of gridlock in washington felt

only five or six days ago that he was still -- the pentagon still wants him to take that position. he was temporarily sidelined by an inquiry into whether they were inappropriate emails between him and jill kelly, the tampa woman involved in the whole petraeus situation, and then he was cleared of any wrong doing by the pentagon. >> you know, we're told now that this -- i mean, this is a sad episode. we're told he did not want to come to -- his family would be involved, and he would have to answer questions. >> you know, draen, i think this shows you that even when you are cleared now the damage done. it's -- it seems hard for me to believe that if the whole jill kelly episode hpt ever aired publicly, that he would have decided he would have wanted to step aside. it seemed like he was on the fast track to get that job. these things -- i think what everyone forgets, this is true with military, this is true with particularly at that level, and it's absolutely true of politicians. these people are people. the focus of the coverage of these emails got lots and lots of attention. the focus

on the pentagon in ten days or so march 1st. that's when it's scheduled to kick in. you heard the president railing about it there. i'm jon scott along with jenna lee. a.b. stoddard is associate editor and a columnist for "the hill." the president railed about congress and this terrible law that was passed without mentioning that it was a white house idea, right? >> right. it is an idea that originated in the white house, but republicans certainly voted for the budget control act in 2011, which included the sequester, because they too thought it could be reversed or undone or replaced. and we're looking 18 months later at -- ten days as you said, not enough time to change these cuts. there is an acceptance in washington in both parties that it's going to go through, and both the white house, which is more recent, but the republican party as well have both said that this sky is going to fall if the sequester goes through. both are come police in it saying that these cuts are draconian and indiscriminate and irresponsible but here we are with both of them unable to come to an agreement. so th

during a pentagon investigation into e-mails that he had exchanged with a civilian woman who was linked to the scandal that forced the director david petraeus to resign. he has since been cleared of wrongdoing.
